Schibsted grotesk font free download: the ZIP below holds 2 font files with a variable weight axis and 583 glyphs, plus the OFL licence.
Yes — Schibsted Grotesk is free for commercial use, including in apps and client websites you ship
Schibsted Grotesk is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 (OFL). You can use it in client work, logos, products you sell, apps, and print, without paying or asking permission.
It was built by Bakken & Baeck and Henrik Kongsvoll as a digital-first family for user interfaces, commissioned for Schibsted (a Nordic media group) to work as both a brand typeface and a working UI font across products — not repurposed from a print typeface the way many “UI-friendly” fonts are.
We verified the license directly from the font file, not from a third-party listing. The embedding permission flag (fsType) is set to 0 — Installable Embedding, the least restrictive value in the OpenType spec.

Need a more minimal, architectural sans instead? Schibsted Grotesk carries a bit of grotesque character in its letterforms. CAIRO Classic Minimalist Sans on theassetcrate trades that for a stricter, lower-contrast look inspired by architecture.

What the OFL license actually lets you do
You can:
- Use Schibsted Grotesk in commercial projects, including client work you bill for
- Use it in a logo or brand identity and trademark that logo
- Sell products that use it — merchandise, packaging, book covers
- Embed it in websites, apps, games, PDFs and ebooks
- Modify it and redistribute your modified version
You cannot:
- Sell the font file on its own, outside a larger bundled product
- Distribute it without the OFL license file
- Release a modified version under a Reserved Font Name
No attribution is required in your design. The OFL only asks that the license travel with the font files.
Inside the file: 583 glyphs and 497 characters

Schibsted Grotesk ships 583 glyphs covering 497 Unicode codepoints.
12 languages in full — Vietnamese not among them
Tested against the full alphabets of 15 languages, Schibsted Grotesk fully covers:
Spanish · French · German · Portuguese · Italian · Polish · Czech · Turkish · Romanian · Hungarian · Dutch · Nordic (Danish, Norwegian, Swedish)
Vietnamese is not supported. The font covers only 23 of the 256 codepoints in the Latin Extended Additional block — the range that holds Vietnamese’s stacked diacritics. If Vietnamese is a requirement, Newsreader on this site is fully covered instead.
Which Unicode blocks those 497 characters cover
| Block | Covered |
|---|---|
| Basic Latin | 95 / 96 |
| Latin-1 Supplement | 95 / 96 |
| Latin Extended-A | 127 / 128 |
| Latin Extended Additional | 23 / 256 |
| Latin Extended-B | 22 / 208 |
| Greek | 8 / 144 |
| General Punctuation | 18 / 112 |
OpenType features: 18, more than most UI-oriented sans fonts
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
aalt | Access all alternates |
calt | Contextual alternates |
dlig | Discretionary ligatures |
frac / numr / dnom | Automatic fractions, numerators, denominators |
zero | Slashed zero |
tnum / pnum | Tabular and proportional figures |
sups | Superscript |
kern / mark / mkmk | Kerning and diacritic positioning |
locl | Localized letterforms |
The slashed zero and full fraction/numerator/denominator set are notable for a UI-focused sans — most stop at tabular figures, but a font built for a media company’s product surfaces (pricing, data tables, bylines) needs more than that.
The weight axis: one continuous range
Schibsted Grotesk is a variable font with a single Weight axis from 400 to 900, giving six named stops:
400 Regular · 500 Medium · 600 SemiBold · 700 Bold · 800 ExtraBold · 900 Black
There is no light or thin end on this family — the range starts at Regular, which matches its brief as a UI/interface font where sub-400 weights are rarely legible at small sizes anyway.
A tall x-height (0.527) — drawn to hold at small sizes
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Units per em | 2,048 |
| Ascender | 2,000 |
| Descender | −528 |
| Cap height ratio | 0.703 |
| x-height ratio | 0.527 |
The x-height ratio of 0.527 is generous, similar to Montserrat, which is exactly what a UI font needs — lowercase text stays legible in small labels and buttons where display faces with a low x-height start to blur.
Right for interfaces, wrong for long reading
Good fit: product UI, dashboards, buttons and labels, data-heavy interfaces needing real tabular/fraction figures, and any commercial project across Latin/Greek where license risk needs to be zero.
Poor fit: any project needing Vietnamese, and long-form editorial body text where a text serif like Newsreader will read more comfortably over paragraphs.
Need a full UI type system with more weights or a matching mono? A licensed superfamily is usually more consistent than mixing free parts:
