Yes — Cormorant Garamond is free for commercial use, including in books and long-form work you sell
Cormorant Garamond is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 (OFL). You can use it in client work, logos, products you sell, apps and print, without paying and without asking permission.
Cormorant is a one-person project: Christian Thalmann conceived, drew, spaced, kerned, programmed and interpolated the entire family himself. The full project spans 45 font files across nine visual styles — Roman, Italic, Infant, Garamond, Upright Cursive, Small Caps, Unicase and more. Cormorant Garamond is the Garamond-flavoured cut of that project. It is drawn as a display face, meaning the hairlines are finer and the contrast higher than a book serif would dare.
We read the license state from the font file itself rather than from a listing. The embedding permission flag (fsType) is 0 — Installable, the least restrictive value in the OpenType specification.

Cormorant Garamond ships 3,241 glyphs covering 974 Unicode codepoints.
Vietnamese, and 13 other languages in full

Tested against the full alphabets of a reference set of languages, Cormorant Garamond fully covers 14:
Vietnamese · Spanish · French · German · Portuguese · Italian · Polish · Czech · Turkish · Romanian · Hungarian · Dutch · Nordic (da/no/sv) · Cyrillic
Vietnamese is fully supported, including stacked diacritics such as ế, ộ, ữ and ỹ — worth checking before you commit, because many free families stop at Latin Extended-A and silently drop them.
Which Unicode blocks those 974 characters cover
| Block | Covered |
|---|---|
| Basic Latin | 95 / 96 |
| Latin-1 Supplement | 95 / 96 |
| Latin Extended-A | 128 / 128 |
| Latin Extended-B | 71 / 208 |
| IPA Extensions | 5 / 96 |
| Greek | 4 / 144 |
| Cyrillic | 220 / 256 |
OpenType features: 40 in the file

|---|---|

calt | Contextual alternates |
case | Case-sensitive forms |
ccmp | Glyph composition |
dlig | Discretionary ligatures |
frac | Fractions |

Plus 28 further feature tags in the file, mostly stylistic-set and script-specific tables.
Variable axes: 1

- Weight (
wght): 300 to 700, continuous
Because this is a single variable file, every intermediate value is available. One file replaces the whole static weight set, which usually means a smaller total download than shipping three or four static cuts.
A low x-height (0.386) — drawn for display and long reading
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Units per em | 1,000 |
| Ascender | 924 |
| Descender | -287 |
| Cap height ratio | 0.625 |
| x-height ratio | 0.386 |
An x-height ratio of 0.386 is on the low side, typical of a face drawn for display or for long reading passages, where oversized lowercase letters would make text feel cramped.
Right for long reading, wrong at poster size
Good fit: Headlines, editorial titling, wedding and luxury branding, book covers — anywhere the fine hairlines can be set large enough to survive.
Poor fit: Body copy at 14–16px, and anything printed small or on absorbent stock. The hairlines disappear.
