Figtree Font: Free Neutral UI Sans, Variable Weight 300–900

Figtree font free download: the ZIP below holds 2 font files with a variable weight axis and 459 glyphs, plus the OFL licence.

Yes — Figtree is free for commercial use, including in apps and client websites you ship

Figtree is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 (OFL). You can use it in client work, logos, products you sell, apps and print, without paying and without asking permission.

Figtree is by Erik Kennedy, a designer better known for teaching interface design than for type. It shows: Figtree is drawn as a working UI face rather than a personality face — neutral shapes, generous spacing, no ornament to get in the way of an interface. It is also the smallest file in this batch by a wide margin, which is a real advantage when you are self-hosting a variable font.

We read the license state from the font file itself rather than from a listing. The embedding permission flag (fsType) is 0 — Installable, the least restrictive value in the OpenType specification.

What’s in the download

The download is a single ZIP containing 2 font files plus the licence:

FileWhat it is
Figtree-Italic[wght].ttfVariable italic — 1 axis: Weight
Figtree[wght].ttfVariable upright — 1 axis: Weight

OFL.txt travels with the files — keep it in the folder if you pass the font on to anyone else. Total download 71 KB.

The download includes the OFL license file. Keep it in the package if you redistribute the font.

What the OFL license actually lets you do

You can:

  • Use Figtree in commercial projects, including client work you bill for
  • Use Figtree in a logo or brand identity, and trademark that logo
  • Sell products that use Figtree — merchandise, packaging, book covers
  • Embed Figtree in websites, apps, games, PDFs and ebooks
  • Modify Figtree and redistribute your modified version

You cannot:

  • Sell the font file on its own, outside a larger bundled product
  • Distribute it without the OFL license file
  • Release a modified version under a Reserved Font Name

No attribution is required in your design. The OFL only asks that the license file travels with the font files.

Inside the file: 459 glyphs and 391 characters

Every character above is rendered from the Figtree font file itself, not from a specimen image supplied by anyone else.

Figtree ships 459 glyphs covering 391 Unicode codepoints.

12 languages in full — Vietnamese not among them

Tested against the full alphabets of a reference set of languages, Figtree fully covers 12:

Spanish · French · German · Portuguese · Italian · Polish · Czech · Turkish · Romanian · Hungarian · Dutch · Nordic (da/no/sv)

Vietnamese is not fully covered in this file. If you need stacked diacritics such as ế, ộ, ữ and ỹ, test before committing.

Variable axes: 1

Figtree weight axis rendered from the variable font file at 300 to 900
Each line is the same variable file set to a different weight value — no separate static cuts involved.
  • Weight (wght): 300 to 900, continuous

Because this is a single variable file, every intermediate value is available. One file replaces the whole static weight set, which usually means a smaller total download than shipping three or four static cuts.

A mid-range x-height (0.500) — why it works across sizes

MetricValue
Units per em1,000
Ascender950
Descender-250
Cap height ratio0.700
x-height ratio0.500

An x-height ratio of 0.500 sits in the normal middle band — no strong bias toward either small-size legibility or display elegance, which is part of why it works across a range of sizes.

Right for interfaces, wrong for long reading

Good fit: Product interfaces, design systems, documentation, dashboards.

Poor fit: Branding that needs a distinct voice — neutrality is the whole design, and it will not carry an identity on its own.
